I had wrote an article on my Chinese blog GENMICHA which was about some websites launched their new favicon, Google is one of them. And now Taobao.com and Alipay.com had returned to their old favicons but Google is still using the “g” favicon.
But I yesterday got a message from Google Offical Blog which is telling why they are using the new favicon is that they want to make their favicon fixed more platform such as iPhone and other mobile platform. And Google is running a contest for everyone to help them design Google favicon.
They have already tried 300 hundred kinds of favicons and now they need more.
If you want to have a try, following these guidelines:
- resolution: 16 pixel x 16 pixel image
- format: .png, .gif, or .ico
- size: 5 KB
- transparency: 32 bit alpha transparency
And your works should fixed their requires:
- Make the shape and profile visible. We’ve found that semi-transparent graphics, specifically 32-bit alpha transparency, work best.
- Incorporate some or all of the letters in “Google.”
- Utilize the primary colors that are used in the Google logo. We’ve found that monochromatic designs tend to work best with blue; yellow is too light and doesn’t provide enough contrast, and red looks like an error.
- Avoid being product specific. The favicon should apply well to many different Google products and devices (e.g., mobile, PC).
- Be timeless. The favicon shouldn’t date itself or be time-specific. Send us a design that you think will last.
After you finished your works, you can submit your favicon here>> and it will last to 20, 2008

wow, you got another nice blog.
